Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ’s annual Service of Lessons and Carols will take place at 7 p.m., on Sunday, Dec. 8, in Herrick Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
The service opens with festive Christmas music, led by Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Orchestra and Choir Director Phillip Clark and Women’s A Cappella Ensemble Director Kristin Clark.
The performance will include “O Holy Night,” “Silent Night,” and other holiday favorites.
Guests will be invited to join the choir and orchestra in Handel’s famous “Hallelujah Chorus.”
A traditional Christian worship service begins at 7:30 p.m. with a choral processional in candlelight, followed by readings and carols.
The Reverend Alice Ford is the officiant.
Cindy Beaubien, Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Assistant to President for Events and Special Projects/Director of Stewardship, has overseen the interior decorating for the service for years. She said it all started with just two Christmas trees set up with a few strands of lights. Since then, the holiday display has expanded to 16 Christmas trees and several wreaths with thousands of strands of lights and hundreds of candles, all surrounding center stage and a manger scene. The annual event usually fills Herrick Chapel to capacity.
“It’s worth the effort,” she said. “To see the look of joy on everyone’s faces during the service makes it all worthwhile.”
