Imagine yourself snacking on antojitos or tapas in a cafe in Mexico or Spain.

Imagine yourself spending a semester living with a Mexican family--completely immersed in their language and culture. Imagine using your ability to speak Spanish to interact with the world's 430 million Spanish speakers. Adrian's communication-focused Spanish curriculum prepares you to participate in one of a number of study abroad programs in locations like Cuernavaca or Merida, Mexico or Granada or Salamanca, Spain.

If you study Spanish at Áù¾ÅÉ«ÌÃ, you'll learn from the experiences of dynamic and culturally engaged professors like John Eipper and Nicholas Kaplan. Because of Dr. Eipper's research in Latin American culture and literature, students in his Hispanic Literatures and Cultures course benefit from his first-hand experiences in Mexico, Chile and Argentina. His background as a translator in the legal and technical fields provides real-life examples for students who are considering careers using their language skills. Professor Kaplan’s primary research interest is the relationship between food and building of national identities. In his courses you will be challenged to use the target language in meaningful ways while studying and learning about the culture. Additionally, he investigates the effective use and incorporation of technology in the teaching and learning environment. He publishes Kahn-Academy style videos offering Spanish grammar tutorials on his MaestroKaplan YouTube channel.

Both Professors Eipper and Kaplan utilize an assortment of upbeat, interactive and engaging pedagogical methodologies in their classrooms, such as VARK modalities, flipped learning, experiential learning, student-centered discussions and technology-based learning. You'll also have plenty of opportunities outside the classroom, such as the Spanish immersion lunch table, Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society: Sigma Delta Pi. You'll also benefit from the City of Adrian's extensive Spanish speaking community as a resource for research projects or service learning. You might even find yourself on a field trip to Detroit to enjoy El Día de los Muertos cultural activities, Mexicantown and/or the Detroit Institute of Arts where you'll see Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals.
